Biology and Eating

Professor Davis-Spring 2008

Reference Books

Encyclopedia of Human Biology. 1997. 9 volumes. [Ref. QP 11 .E53]
A very good overview of the nuts and bolts of how humans work. See articles on Feeding Behavior and a variety of Food-related topics. Broad and specific: so Eye, Anatomy and Endometriosis. Use the index!

Encyclopedia of Human Behavior
. 1994. 4 volumes. [Ref. BF 31 .E5]
Scholarly articles on the psychology and physiology of why we do what we do. Articles on Appetite, Body Image, and Taste are particularly relevant.

Encyclopedia of Medical Anthropology. 2004. 2 volumes. [Ref. RA 418 .E354]
A slightly different take on the subject.  A lengthy article on Nutrition and Health in volume 1 discusses problems with human physiology and the modern diet. We're built to be Stone Age hunter-gatherers.

Databases for General, Non-Technical Articles

These indexes are available from the Library webpage under Research Databases, or you can search for them by name in the library catalog.

Off-campus access: use the links under Databases A to Z rather than these.

Academic Search Premier (1975-) is the world's largest database of full text information. It covers over 6,000 magazines, newspapers, and scholarly journals in all areas of study. Over 3,600 peer-reviewed titles. This database should always be your first stop if you need to find an article.

InfoTrac OneFile 1980 - present
Combines the journals in the other databases into one large database for easier searching.

Health and Wellness Resource Center includes a variety of general introductions to almost anything health-related. Also includes the full text of the Gale Encyclopedia of Medicine, a high-class scholarly source on things like anorexia.

Databases for Research and Review Articles

ScienceDirect
Searchable database of over 1000 largely scientific and technical journals, most of which are available full text.  To locate review articles, use the checkbox under the Journal tab. You can also try similar databases by other publishers, like Wiley Interscience and BioOne.

Medline
The value-added version of Pubmed, with more full-text. 4800 biomedical journals.  There is a checkbox that allows you to limit your search to review articles.

JSTOR Full-text database of backfile (articles published 4-5 years ago) of leading peer-reviewed journals in biology and anthropology

Web Resources

Pubmed is the National Library of Medicine's index to 15 million million biomedical articles. This is the open web version (i.e., Wofford didn't pay for it) so there are many fewer full articles available from here.

Webmd covers a wide range of medical conditions and health-related issues. More from a consumer's perspective: how to identify it, how to fix it. Links to good resources.

Google Scholar is a search engine for scientific information, primarily books and articles. Pretty good coverage of biology, but often the links are not free. However, the library owns or subscribes to lots of the things you'll find here.
